Being just 10 minutes’ walk from Canary Wharf station, Dollar Bay will be at the heart of the future growth and opportunity predicted to flood into the area. The station will be a key hub on the fast new Crossrail line linking east, central and west London, and is also being transformed into a dramatic retail space.
‘Crossrail will change the whole map of London, especially travelling times,’ says Noel Flint, estate agent Knight Frank’s head of London residential. ‘The line will connect Canary Wharf to Bond Street in under 13 minutes – it’s extraordinary.’
‘People working around Canary Wharf who currently don’t chose to live there will want to move in, because, not only will they be able to walk to work, but at the weekend, they can quickly be in the West End to meet friends, go shopping or to the theatre. Plus, in no time, they can get to City Airport, one of the world’s most user-friendly airports, or to Stratford International train station for continental links. The area will become a world hub.’
Already having evolved into London’s new financial centre and a dynamic leisure destination, Canary Wharf’s transformation has been remarkable. In the recession-hit early 1990s, it was perceived as a semi-derelict, hard-to reach backwater, devoid of amenities and culturally sterile. Now, dozens of major banks, law firms, financial services organisations and media corporations are based there, accommodating some 150,000 workers.
But Canary Wharf is not just about offices. More than 300 shops, cafés, bars and restaurants – from popular chains to some of the capital’s most exclusive eateries – call the neighbourhood home. The area also has one of the largest public-art collections in the UK, with 65 works displayed throughout its parks and waterside walkways. Canary Wharf is also home to exciting temporary exhibitions and displays too – at the start of 2016 the Winter Lights festival filled the dark nights with 18 beautiful light installations from some of the most innovative artists and designers working today.
‘Investors are already buying around Crossrail stations, and people have this excited feeling of “I can’t believe it’ll only take me a few minutes to cross the whole of London,”‘ says Flint.
With Canary Wharf increasingly synonymous with fun as much as with finance, Dollar Bay’s striking silhouette not only reflects its waterside setting, but the shining future of an area at the dawn of a new era.
