    Rolex:
    Face of the future

Watches of Switzerland and Rolex have enjoyed a long and illustrious relationship – and there’s even better to come

    WORDS: JOANNE GLASBEY

The result of the UK’s EU referendum has left many reeling, but our watch retailers are currently performing jigs, as one of the consequences of the pound’s inevitable plummet has resulted in a surge in timepiece-buying by visiting consumers enjoying advantageous currency exchange rates. The luxury watch market experienced growth at a remarkable 16.5 per cent* between July and September this year, a significant improvement on previous quarters. In fact, Aurum Holdings, a leading force in the UK watch-retailing world, has reported outperforming the market with an estimated 39 per cent* market share.

Aurum is the country’s leading watch specialist, with a number of brands, many with a bias towards luxury.Three in particular have serious heritage: Watches of Switzerland, with a concentration in London and at Heathrow airport, is 91 years old, offering a range of high-end brands; Mappin & Webb, the royal warrant holder, last year celebrated its 240th anniversary; and Goldsmiths, which was the first retailer of Rolex in the UK, way back in 1919, is over 230 years old. This range of brands means the group is well represented throughout the country and uniquely placed to monitor the market and its trends. Recent years have witnessed a wave of stand-alone mono-brand watch boutiques jostling for the best sites on Bond Street and other prime shopping locations in London. But sometimes breadth of selection is more rewarding. For those contemplating the purchase of a prestige timepiece – or looking for some independent advice across the high-end brands – Watches of Switzerland’s one-stop retail experience covers all bases. Clients will find essential unbiased viewpoints, expertise and choice in a comfortably relaxed environment. Even brand devotees will find it an attractive destination in which to gain an overview of what’s happening in the luxury watch marketplace. Both the enthusiast and the connoisseur are welcome at special events organised at the stores.

This approach seems to be working, as returning clients are an important aspect of the Watches of Switzerland business. The brand continues to expand: this year saw the opening of the fully refurbished Knightsbridge store, completing the third point of the ‘golden triangle’ that also includes a store on Oxford Street and the flagship emporium on Regent Street. Of all the brands, Aurum has a particularly rich and proud relationship with Rolex. The invincible Swiss watchmaker dominates the UK’s luxury watch market, with a significant proportion of all Rolex sales made through Aurum outlets.Watches of Switzerland has the largest share, as the retailer also operates the Rolex boutique on Old Bond Street. The enduring appeal of Rolex is easily explained, says Watches of Switzerland’s specialist watch buyer, Faye Soteri. ‘Synonymous with luxury, desirability and quality, the brand is both aspirational and achievable, with an entry level of £3,550.’
