Historic shoemaker Crockett & Jones is a proudly British business, one of only a handful that can still claim to make their wares on home soil, just as it has done since 1879. The factory based at Northampton’s Magee Street has been in operation since 1891, and Crockett & Jones is still a family-owned business producing the kind of traditional, beautifully made shoes and boots that last a lifetime.
Although a quintessentially British brand, Crockett & Jones travelled to the land of fire and ice for its newly unveiled autumn/winter campaign. The dramatic scenery of Iceland was chosen to showcase the strength, durability and undeniable elegance of the company’s new-season boots. It’s easy to see why the rugged east coast of Iceland was chosen; not just as a scenic backdrop but as an inadvertent test run for the new footwear. The volcanic island is a mix of mountain peaks, icefields, fjords and hot springs.
‘Iceland was a wonderful location,’ commented Crockett & Jones brand director, James Fox. ‘It is almost unworldly, with vistas for miles at every corner. Used as a backdrop for some of the greatest “out of this world” films, it is tough to recreate the natural wonder of Iceland. There really was no better place to shoot a fine selection of winter boots. Not only did we shoot our new AW22 collection, we also took our nine best-selling winter boots along for the ride (walk).’
But you needn’t travel far to get the most out of Crockett & Jones shoes. Even if your plans don’t include venturing much beyond the M25, Crockett & Jones is imploring people to ‘explore the outdoors’ in its new campaign. Boots are made for walking, and with love, care and use, the company’s shoes will see you through many winters to come.
The British shoemaker has exceptional credentials when it comes to producing quality, hardy footwear, having made boots for both World Wars, as well as developing Antarctic-ready boots for Sir Ernest Shackleton and his crew over a century ago. Each pair of Crockett & Jones shoes undergoes meticulous stages of development, with traditional hand craftsmanship and exacting standards. These include freehand pattern cutting, hand sewing and staining, and applying the Goodyear welt, a protective leather strip that can be replaced over time as it wears down.
For autumn/winter 2022, Crockett & Jones has introduced three new styles in “rough-out” suede, what it describes as ‘the material of the season’. These are Indiana, Denver and Molton, as well as new colourways for old favourites, including the oldest selling chukka boot, Chiltern, which has been in the main collection since 1959. Molton is another style of chukka – a perennial favourite come winter – and made famous by Daniel Craig in his 007 cinematic outings. Crockett & Jones has been the official shoemaker for the world’s most famous spy since 2012’s Skyfall, and a new version of Molton is now available in rough-out suede and a stylish all-black colourway.
Completely new for the season is Glencoe, a modern iteration of the aforementioned Antarctic boots and named after Shackleton’s love of Scotland. These boots will keep you snug on even the coldest winter excursion, braving the elements with a cleated rubber sole and storm welt. In fact, Crockett & Jones is dubbing the Glencoe its most ‘extreme winter boot to date’.
‘Glencoe is a winter boot to trump all winter boots,’ added Fox. ‘This style gives customers an option to go well below zero in a pair of well-made English boots. Its shearling lining and collar keep the elements and debris out as you walk for miles in perfect comfort.’
