A hotel designed to represent and encapsulate the extraordinary style and joie de vivre of Britain’s most famous prime minister, The Churchill is luxuriously designed to subtly incorporate aspects of the great man’s life in ways that add comfort, elegance and whimsical points of difference without ever becoming over-the-top. The hotel extensively refurbished in 2017 with the help of Churchill’s family to incorporate the man’s love of tailoring, art, and fine British craftsmanship. Particular attention was paid to the suites, which are the most salubrious places to stay in the hotel. Large, airy, exceptionally comfortable and well thought out, the suites are full of artworks and beautiful furniture adorned with pinstripe, herringbone and button details – all suited to one of the world’s greatest leaders.
The hotel is located just south of Marylebone and is handily opposite private members’ club Home House, if you require a hotel to recommend to clients that’s convenient for entertaining. It’s in the heart of London’s West End without being on the overly busy beaten path. The location makes it a convenient place to stay, or just to visit the really lovely bar and restaurant. The Montagu Kitchen, the hotel’s main restaurant, was also recently relaunched and is inspired by Churchill’s former home in Kent, Chartwell. In fact, executive chef Mark Sainsbury and the team have worked with the stately home to make the restaurant’s menu a fitting reflection of the famed gardens at Chartwell. The fare on offer features a delicious range of English cuisines and cocktails, all prepared in a captivating open kitchen. Try the Clementine Chase, a cocktail named for Churchill’s beloved wife and flavoured with roses to remember the rose garden in which the couple met. Dishes from the Josper grill are recommended, as well as the slow-cooked lamb and marmalade-glazed pork belly. For dessert, the raspberry rose Bakewell with honey ice cream is one not to miss.
Next door, the Churchill Bar & Terrace is the real deal, serving a selection of Churchill-inspired cocktails in plush green velvet and burnished brass surrounds with a book collection chosen in collaboration with Daunt. The bar also boasts a winter wonderland of an outside area, perfect for cigar smokers, replete with fluffy throws and blankets, and heated throughout the colder months. The cocktails are well thought-out and original – the menu takes you on a journey through Sir Winston’s life and it’s quite difficult to stop exploring the list once you’ve started. The perfect spot for a pre-dinner drink or a nightcap before retiring to your suite, it’ll leave you feeling like if not a king, then certainly a prime minister.
From now until the end of March 2019, The Churchill is offering guests the Churchill Experience – a chance to really spend the day in the shoes of the former PM. The experience includes overnight accommodation for two people; a bottle of Churchill’s favourite Champagne, Pol Roger, on arrival; a traditional wet shave from Sir Winston’s favourite barbers, Truefitt & Hill; a Churchill-inspired cocktail, The Water of Life, made with his favourite cognac at The Churchill Bar & Terrace; and dinner at The Montagu Kitchen. The Churchill Experience is priced from £599 per room based on two people sharing. Throughout the period, Truefitt & Hill will also be running a pop-up barbershop in the extensive and elegant lobby of The Churchill for wet shaves and grooming.
