In the novels of Ian Fleming, the nominally Scottish spy James Bond was certainly a committed drinker, but not necessarily the most patriotic. Mentions of specific whiskies are frequently, in fact, whiskeys – he tends to favour bourbon. Occasionally, a Canadian rye or, reluctantly, a Japanese whisky. In keeping with the times when Fleming was writing, the Scotches he opts for are blends.
However, Bond on film has always been ripe for a reboot and the Daniel Craig era saw him as a single malt man. Specifically, as Javier Bardem’s character Raoul Silva reveals to horrific effect in Skyfall, ‘Fifty-year-old Macallan. A particular favourite of yours, I understand…’
That part of the script forms part of an eye-catching display at Harrods until 21 March – celebrating the fact that the Knightsbridge store is the only place in the UK where you can buy all six of the bottles of The Macallan James Bond 60th Anniversary Release. This is a set of six bottles (the single malt inside is the same in each… a non-age-statement classic rich Macallan), each with packaging representing a different decade of movie Bond.
The Harrods exhibition is partly a window display (at the corner of Brompton Road and Hans Road), with storyboards and animations, but you have to go inside for the full effect. Not only can you get up close to one of 007’s most beloved gadgets, Little Nellie, the gyrocopter from You Only Live Twice (you can digitally “fly” Q’s baby!), but you can also find yourself avoiding being fed to a shark while the John Barry theme plays. But it’s the wall of drawers where some real treasures can be found… Jaws’ metal teeth from The Spy Who Loved Me, Oddjob’s bowler hat from Goldfinger and the fake Fabergé egg from Octopussy, among other treasures.
Your investigations shouldn’t stop there, however. Venture downstairs to Harrods’ cocktail bar, Baccarat (another nod to Bond – it’s the card game he plays against Le Chiffre in the book of Casino Royale, not Texas Hold’em) and mention The Macallan when asking for the menu. No plot spoilers, but some spy craft is required to discover the six cocktails on the menu, each representing a different decade from the collection.
