Fitting to this tradition, Krug is also a champagne house with a long connection to music, the art form that forges emotional communion among people. For years, Krug has explored a programme of Music Connections, inviting composers and musicians such as violinist and composer Iwao Furusawa and pianist and composer Kris Bowers to collaborate with them by creating music inspired by tasting Krug champagne. 

Expanding on this tradition, Krug has just announced a collaboration with Devialet audio technology pioneer and Belgian musician and 3D sound artist Ozark Henry to create a multi-sensory experience to enhance tasting Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Edition. 

As Olivier Krug, the sixth-generation head of the champagne house, says: ‘Growing up in this house, I recall the music drifting into the garden in summer. My grandfather loved jazz, so we often listened to the many vinyl records of his vast collection as we enjoyed Krug champagne together. My father always said the best way to enjoy this sensorial experience is to share it.’

The experience has been designed for headphones and creates an immersive experience of being placed in an audio space where they can hear the story of the champagne house while sipping a glass of Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Edition. Henry’s pioneering work in 3D sound is about capturing audio from multiple positions to give the listener a 360-degree immersive experience. In this recording, it is used to take the listener through the Champagne region and on a journey of discovery to see how Krug cellar master Julie Cavil used her instinct to create the Krug Grande Cuvée 170ème Edition from hundreds of different vintages. 

‘Each Edition of Krug Grande Cuvée is a unique orchestra of musicians playing together, developing its own harmonious style throughout the years in the cellar,’ says Cavil. ‘Over time, different Éditions become increasingly distinctive as certain facets are accentuated, while at their core each retains the essence of Krug Grande Cuvée as the most generous expression of champagne.’
