INEOS Grenadier Detour

When adventure is calling, sometimes the longer route is worth it. That’s the ethos behind Ineos Automotive’s latest 4×4, the Grenadier Detour. A one-of-200 piece, this off-roader is as personal as the journeys it’ll take you on.

Capturing the unwavering attention of the crowd at Goodwood Festival of Speed, where it was launched in July, the Detour is the first of a new breed under the Arcane Works division. A unique new service that creates limited-edition runs of the award-winning Grenadier station wagon, Arcane Works will be a testbed for new technologies and systems for Ineos vehicles, such as uprated engine modifications and new chassis rigs.

Lauded for creating workhorse engines that make light work of muddy mountain trails and dusty desert terrain, Ineos imbues the Detour with the unrivalled off-road capabilities of the Grenadier and the heritage craftsmanship inherent to British design. Though it’s rugged to the core, this one is a looker – and for the first time, the signature details are all up to you.

‘Arcane Works is intended to create a truly individual 4×4, hand-finished with exclusive materials and personalised touches by specially curated craftsmen,’ explains commercial director George Ratcliffe. ‘We know this is something our customers have been looking for, and working in small batches means we can give them a genuinely custom-made experience.’

Here, premium is a given – even the Detour’s understated badging has been crafted by British jeweller Vaughtons. Four options of bespoke fine-grain leather have been created by Bridge of Weir – an artisanal Scottish manufacturer pioneering sustainable tanning – to line the Detour’s interior, and can be intricately stitched with words or a design of your choice. Need inspiration? For its Goodwood debut, the Grenadier Detour’s front seats were detailed with the festival’s coordinates.

Elsewhere, its headliners are upholstered in a choice of two Johnstons of Elgin cashmeres (with its Royal Warrant of Appointment to His Majesty The King, you’re in good company). Each model features a laser-etched aluminium door scuff plate displaying the vehicle’s limited-edition status, and can also be inscribed with your own text or signature – “Brummell woz ere”, perhaps? Plus, need you another creative outlet, you can pick any colour for the body and Arcane Works will match it from a palette of 7,500 shades. Hand-sprayed in its one-of-one hue, the truck is then polished by hand to enhance its enviable lustre.

But the Grenadier Detour’s fine aesthetics aren’t a distraction from what’s going on under the bonnet. Engineered in Germany and built in France, its robust body-on-frame platform conceals two straight-six, 3.0-litre BMW engines – either petrol or diesel – that have regularly appeared on “top 10 world’s best engine” lists. Distinctive, forged 18-inch alloy wheels and a specially designed new front grille with headlight surrounds are topped off with an exclusively tailored exhaust system that enhances the noise and character of the vehicle. That sounds like luxury to us.
