Founded in 1894 by John Barbour in South Shields, North East England, Barbour is best known for its durable and waterproof waxed jackets, which are still manufactured by hand in its South Shields factory. However, while its origins are rooted in sturdy outerwear for country pursuits, the company has diversified its product ranges to produce clothing and accessories collections for both country and city life.

Barbour’s first collection of men’s shirts was introduced in 1914. Inspired by John Barbour’s founding principles of quality, durability, attention to detail and fitness for purpose, the new shirt department offers expertly tailored shirts with a focus on checks, in a choice of short and long sleeve styles. All made from lightweight fabrics designed for warmer months, there is an array of colours and patterns, from traditional plain colours to contemporary micro-prints and polka dots.

New contemporary additions to Barbour’s shirt offering include cotton seersuckers and linen shirts, which are relaxed, versatile and easy to wear with jeans, shorts or tailored trousers. Updates of classic designs include Country Gingham styles in small checks and bold colours, and large Highland checks in strong colours tailored with narrower sleeves around the biceps for a more defined shape to the forearm and cuff.

The signature Tattersall shirt featuring the Tattersall pattern – that dates back to 1766 when blankets with a checked pattern were sold at Tattersall’s horse market – is a timeless Barbour favourite. Alongside traditional Tattersalls, the shirt department also features variations that have been reinvented with a play on scale and colour-pop highlights created using light poplins in high density weaves for greater colour depth.

Not forgetting the ultimate wardrobe staple, Barbour’s elegant Oxford shirts, available in classic white, navy and light blue, are perfect for dressing up or down for work or leisure.
