The background
From stunning beaches and lush vegetation to vibrant culture and exquisite cuisine, Brazil is a nation of endless discovery. But for those keen to visit the fifth-largest country in the world, choosing where to stay from the infinite options can be a task. The main cities, such as São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, may be the first places that spring to mind, but the most authentic experience of Brazil is one that veers slightly off the beaten path.
Nestled on the coastline of the Atlantic Ocean in the historic state of Bahia, Trancoso is a quaint fishing outpost known as a fashionable, bohemian beach town with a loyal tourist base. Once a sleepy fishing village, it has made its name as an eco-friendly, hippie enclave. It’s a destination that attracts A-list jet-setters, such as Naomi Campbell, Leonardo DiCaprio and Beyoncé, who are enthralled by its laid-back charm and velvety, white-sand beaches.
Trancoso’s ethereal essence is defined by its picturesque landscape and unpretentious lifestyle. The tropical vegetation of the Brazilian jungle weaves through the town, leading on to the unspoilt, palm-fringed coastline overlooking the warm Atlantic. Quadrado, the central square located in the heart of Trancoso, is populated by colourful buildings that house a plethora of coffee houses, shops and restaurants boasting the gastronomic excellence of the traditional local cuisine. Order an ice-cold caipirinha to go and take a stroll through the tropical sandy terrains. Like most who visit Trancoso, once you arrive, you’ll never want to leave.
The villa
Just a stone’s throw from the lapping waves of the Atlantic Ocean, Mandacaru is an expansive, newly built beach house that exudes the spirit of freedom, sophistication and relaxation Trancoso is known for. Housing up to 14 guests, this seven-suite mansion consists of six double rooms opening on to the tranquil garden, each paired with its own ensuite bathroom, and a master suite beautifully decorated with sumptuous wooden interiors and fresh white linen.
The house is characterised by an airy, tropical, boho feel with rustic wooden floorboards, smooth stoneware surfaces and exposed thatched roofs. The in-house team of staff includes a personal chef and a thoughtful concierge, who can arrange everything from surfing lessons to entry to some of Trancoso’s most sought-after events.
Patio doors open out on to the gorgeous garden overlooking the Bahian coast, creating a light breeze through the villa, almost as if the living area extends onto the plush, sandy beach itself. Outside, a calming lap pool surrounds the circumference of the house, alongside lounge chairs, a huge day bed and plenty of sun beds to soak in the rays and enjoy the staggering ocean views.
The outdoor dining area, known as “Casa Barbecue”, is extensively equipped with a traditional Brazilian slow barbecue and wood-fired pizza oven. The chic bar area is kitted out with table football, table tennis and even a barman, ready to prepare your cocktail of choice. An outdoor seating area surrounds a fire pit overlooking the unspoilt landscape of the Brazilian tropics – the perfect setting to enjoy the sights of the blissful horizon at sunset.
