When an object is labelled “made in Italy”, you know that it’s going to be something special. That’s because Italians have craftsmanship in their DNA; having pioneered advances in architecture, interiors and product design for centuries (not to mention kick-starting a little thing called the Renaissance).
So it should come as little surprise to learn that the world’s coolest sunglasses brand was born in Italy. Persol – from the Italian “per il sole”, meaning “for the sun” – is one of the oldest optical companies in the world, dating back to 1917, when the frames were manufactured for pilots and Turin tram drivers. Every pair is still made in Italy to this day. And like all enduring innovations, Persol pioneered a number of “firsts”, including introducing spring hinges and being the first eyewear brand to create a folding glasses model in the 1960s.
The latter was a flexi version of the iconic Persol 714 frames; instantly recognisable with their pilot-shaped lenses and keyhole bridge, with the unmistakable Persol silver “arrow” on the hinge.
The Persol 714 rocketed to fame when it appeared on screen, worn by actor Steve McQueen in the 1968 flick, The Thomas Crown Affair. The King of Cool wore them so well that Persol later created a dedicated “714SM – Steve McQueen” range, which is updated every other year.
This year, the re-issue of the Steve McQueen frames coincides with the centenary of the 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. A renowned petrol head and keen racer – alongside his acting and sex symbol duties – McQueen starred in the 1971 film Le Mans, where he wore his trusty Persol 714s backstage in between filming. During this year’s 100th anniversary race (10 – 11 June), Persol will be hosting an open-air cinema screening of a series of motor culture films. And alongside the reissued 714 Steve McQueen frames, which include the signature Havana shade and contrasting colour polar lenses in gradient blue, green and dark grey, Persol has unveiled a limited-edition Centennial edition. These eye-catching white frames feature hand-finished ivory acetate with gold engraving and even 24k gold plates lenses, as well as a commemorative white storage box with racing stripes, inspired by McQueen’s jacket in Le Mans. An icon in the making, both on and off the track.
