Celebrating a timepiece that has, courtesy of Nasa’s space programme, journeyed to the moon and back, Omega has recently unveiled a new chapter in the illustrious Speedmaster saga. Renowned for its precision and style, the “Moonwatch” now has a glammed-up range of Speedmaster 38 models, that seamlessly blend the classic tool watch functions of the legendary chronograph with a contemporary, refined twist.
The new-addition Speedmaster line-up consists of eight timepieces that highlight Omega’s commitment to combining innovation and design excellence. From the rich rosy tones of Sedna Gold to the softer more yellowish hues of Moonshine Gold and the polished stainless-steel variations, the latest 38mm models cater to the diverse preferences of today’s watch buyers. The sunray dials in rich chocolate or deep racing green PVD take on a chameleon shine that changes in tone depending on different light levels and the metal they are paired with.
According to Omega CEO and president Raynald Aeschlimann, the decision to elevate the Speedmaster 38 – a collection that was introduced in 2017 – with precious metal cases and bracelets, as well as intricate gem-setting, reflects a growing demand for opulent interpretations of the celebrated watch. The inclusion of diamond-set bezels, sparkling sub-dials and gem-topped crowns brings an aura of exclusivity, taking the familiar design to new heights.
Underscoring the brand’s dedication to making timepieces that transcend conventional gender boundaries, Aeschlimann believes that the Speedies will appeal to as many men as women (see Jimmy Fallon’s choice of wristwear at this year’s Met Gala), saying at the launch, ‘I don’t subscribe to the notion of a “gendered watch”. At Omega, the 38mm has consistently been a resounding success precisely because it does not merely appear as a downsized version of the Speedmaster. I don’t think we have icons of femininity and masculinity anymore, just icons of style. Why should diamonds only be for ladies? If it fits the design, then it works.’
The larger diamonds that Omega has selected for the watches (each model with a total of 1.5 carats on the bezel) are sourced following the brand’s commitment to ethical practices. As a certified member of the Responsible Jewellery Council (RJC), Omega is clear that the supply chain behind the new timepieces adheres to the highest standards of integrity and sustainability.
The stylish new form does not affect the function, as these 38s are powered by the brand’s Calibre 3330, a high-performance automatic chronograph movement that is COSC-certified. Equipped with a co-axial escapement and silicon balance spring, this calibre ensures exceptional precision and reliability, delivering the same performance as a less decorated Speedmaster.
As Omega continues to redefine the boundaries of contemporary watch design, the Speedmaster 38 collection serves as a testament to the brand’s pursuit of innovation. With this latest iteration, the legacy of the Speedmaster continues to shine brightly, underlining Omega’s status as an undisputed style leader in the realm of luxury horology.
